xAI Targets 10 GW of New Compute in 2027 Across Memphis-Area Sites

SpaceX's AI unit is running or building at least four data centers in Memphis and nearby Southaven, Mississippi, including the Colossus 2 cluster. On an earnings call, Elon Musk said the sites should have roughly 2.5 to 3 GW online by year-end and could add about 10 GW in 2027. The company is also building cooling infrastructure sized for up to 20 GW of compute.

What It Means

Growing from about 3 GW to more than 10 GW in one year means building power, cooling and commissioning in parallel across several sites. The company itself calls cooling a limiting factor, a sign that thermal infrastructure now sets the schedule as much as chips or grid access. For owners delivering dense AI capacity, mechanical design and sequencing deserve the same early attention as the electrical work.
